Sizing in Textile: Objectives & Characteristics

In weaving “Well sized, well woven”. The efficiency of the loom and the unit cost of the fabric depend a lot on sizing. The yarn during the weaving process from the backrest, drop wires, heads frame and the reed. Moreover the yarn rubs against each other during shedding, due to which it comes across lot of stress and strain.

The objectives of Sizing:

1- To increase the tensile strength. 2- To cover the hairiness of yarn
3- Maintaining the elongation of yarn. 4- Proper softness of the yarn sheet
5- Smoothness of the surface of yarn 6- Proper and even take up of the size
7- Adding weight to the yarn

While choosing the ingredients for sizing following considerations must be borne in mind.

1- There should be minimum dusting off and fiber off at the loom.
2- Warp breaks must be minimum.
3- The cost should be minimum with maximum efficiency.
4- The size should be removed easily during wet processing.
5- If the cloth is to be used in loom state the effect of size on cloth handle and appearance must be taken into account.
